D-Day At Navy Wings

Navy Wings RNAS Yeovilton Ilchester BA20 8HT United Kingdom
19Jun2024

Navy Wings is hosting a D-Day special Supporters event on Wednesday 19th June 2024 at 13:00pm to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

17 Naval Air Squadrons were awarded Normandy 1944 Battle Honours for their contribution during Operation Neptune, part of Operation Overlord, that 80 years ago began the liberation of France and laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western front.

With characteristic versatility, the Fleet Air Arm operated embarked squadrons of Hellcats, Wildcats, and Avengers from Escort Carriers at sea, flew Swordfish, Seafires, Spitfires and Avengers from airfields along the South Coast, and provided ‘fighter spotter’ support during the landings in France.

This is a fantastic opportunity to visit the Navy Wings Heritage Hangar, situated in RNAS Yeovilton. Navy Wings is not generally accessible to the public and this is a great chance to get up close to some of the last remaining Naval historic aircraft.

This will be a 1940’s themed day (please feel free to dress up - this is optional) with traditional 1940’s music. Our Swordfish, W5856, will be dressed to impress in her D-Day markings and positioned in our hangar doors for the perfect photo opportunity.

You will have lunch in our hangar surrounded by our aircraft, receive a detailed engineering update from our Chief Engineer. There will also be an opportunity to meet our pilots, including those who fly the Swordfish, listen to a talk about D-Day and meet our talented engineers who work on our aircraft every day.

To finish off the afternoon, we will take our Swordfish onto the dispersal and guests will be able to watch a Swordfish start up - a truly unique experience!

A limited number (50) of tickets are available on a first come, first served basis.

Supporters £15.00 per person
